Rockin’ the Hemispheres Together

Updated: Mar 22, 2021

The Effects of Music & Rock Rhythm

We know that musical frequencies can deliver potent subliminal messages into the limbic brain. And the new alluring rhythms of blues and rock entrained people to move in ways they might never have considered before. Previous to the Sixties, only in Black Gospel churches or dance halls did people really let the music move them. The heavy 4/4 beat was the conveyor belt leading us into a new world.

To my mind, the specific effect of the rock rhythm was to pull together the northern and southern hemispheres of the planet. The North created the beatific sounds of Mozart, Vivaldi, banjos and country dances, while Africa especially gave us the lower bass sounds of primal drums. Africans had shared their music and rhythms for a hundred years, melding it into ragtime and jazz. But Fifties and Sixties rock rhythm took from north and south to distill the perfectly brewed formula to reach all corners of the planet. It was the belt or suspenders that tied the shirt and pants of the planet together for the first time…at least musically! My friend Terra reported that in the 80s, in a deep impenetrable, primitive pre-cell phone village of Thailand, the locals shouted out to her for “Seendee Laupere”… The music had seeped in EVERYWHERE!
