Buffy Sainte Marie is one of those unique perfomers who perfectly reflects the authenticity of the 1960s. I was truly hooked on her.

Her wailing otherworldly earthy voice carried tremendous power. She played a six-string guitar. I witnessed her power in her live performance at the Troubadour, the legendary showcase for so many--from Jackson Browne to Elton John.

She was exquisite in her fringed white leather garb.

Buffy's music had its own organic source of life. Her melody did not follow a metronome beat. Hers was a biological rhythm emanating from the soul. "She Lived Alone in Town" is a perfect example.

Her Cherokee background influenced her tendency to sing of social issues. Her song, "The Universal Soldier" was daring to suggest that it wasn't just the war industry responsible for war. Every individual who partakes must take some responsibility as well. And she could sing of nature and sing of love. Always heartfelt.
